The charred rope idea was used during the 1st WW by the military for lighting up their smokes while in the trenches. The lighters were named "Trench Lighters". A lighted match would light up the face of a soldier making him an easy target so they had to come up with something a little more safe.. Ebay has trench lighters listed most of the time.
