was at this site 2 weeks ago. Found out about the head from a guy at my yard sale. He was looking for some arrow heads to purchase. we started talking and wound up he telling me of this he came across while searching an area I had hiked in several times. I had been to the same place several times in years past. Never noticed the head. He barely noticed it himself. It's located a short hike from the Vermillion river in Illinois
It's a photobucket video...click on it to view

Re: Mattheson State Park IL rock carved head
Next month I'll be doing some in depth research on the head. Got to find an archeologist that works for the state park.
You'll notice in the one photo how low to the ground it is. I suspect there is at least 4-5 feet of gravel deposited over a 2,000 year time span. Long ago someone stood up straight and pecked away at that ancient piece of art.
There has been evidence found in the park of "archaic" occupation sites.

I came across this statement 2 days ago while doing some research. It might very well be the rock head in my photos.

...Or ..the people were very short back then...why mammoths looked so tall..

..Or.. where he carved the face the cliff actually stood out quite a bit farther originally..It took him a LONG time and a LOT of whittling to finally get his face done right. The chiseled off pieces fell to the ground around his feet,knees,waist..

..Or..he invented the slingshot..didn't like door-to-door salesmen..and kept PLENTY of ammo handy to get rid of them..

..Or..

He must have been in an isolated area..has plenty of ammo left.
I always like the movie "Secondhand Lions"..a good way top spend your retirement years when you can't hike/hunt any more..

I can just picture RR sitting on a porch like that.."Why hell..it looked like a turkey to me!"

RR is the type of guy that will be fishing and hunting till there aint no mo air in his lungs.
good weather coming this week, will go camping in the area of the rock art head to do some searching.

Picturing the old sleuth with a shotgun mount and turkey caller on his walker with the slit camouflage tennis balls on the feet...

Weather is changing for the better. Taking off today for a 2 day camping adventure to do research and try out a new pellet burner. Got a good deal on a stainless steel flame concentrator at a thrift store. It's an electric grill turned upside down.

paid $4 minus the electric rotor set-up
will do some photos of it in action.
