Is the fire chamber and flue one piece/2 pieces connected at a joint? Vermiculite surrounds them both? The body of the stove will never show signs of getting hot?

It's one piece....
we cut the stainless pipe at a 45 the welded the two to make a 90.
the divider for air and fuel runs through the horizontal piece for all but the last four inches where we welded a stainless piece of expanded metal.

The Vermiculite completely surrounds the flue and burn chamber.
The outer container does get hot to the touch but not enough that an incidental brush against would burn a person.

Well that's one heck of a nice way to make one. I bet your son claims the stove as his own jambalaya testing station :D with Jake as his assistant :D Your family sure does know how to eat well, laugh a lot and enjoy life :DB:

What's your goto choice of wood for your rocket?

Do you fond the pot support is high enough to have good draft for minimum smoke?
