i'm looking for a down bag

Postby irrationalsolutions » Sun Nov 08, 2009 3:36 am

since we are on the topic of down bags...

the one i got for this year isnt going to cut it another year. the bag is good and still in great shape but i cant keep using it. the wife gets it next year. my main peoblem is the zipper. its a half zip and i thought i could deal with it but i was wrong. i need a full zipper. i sleep warmer than most and the way the weather changes here i need to be able to open it on warmer nights.

so im looking for a (cheap to cheap-ish) down bag with a full zipper right side. i would like something between 50 and 65F i can go with 45 but 40 is pushing it.

i know that with those temps its really no need for down but i want to be able to use it year round and i have a PLAN!

(the wife hates it when i say i have a plan. they usually work great but she still hates it)

so if anyone has any good tips or ideas i could use some help finding one. i havent really been able to find one yet that fits everything i want.

I've got a Big Agnes Yampa 40deg bag that I use with an Exped Downmat 7 short. Around here, we usually don't get extremely cold nights. The pad is rated to something like -15deg, and I can supplement my bag with a liner as needed. In a pinch, I'll use a hot water bottle. The Yampa is listed as an overbag, so if sometime in the future I need to go really low, I can use another bag inside of it.
I use this setup in a Hennessy hammock. I mostly camp with the scouts, and got this setup in the event that I ever needed to go to ground (oh the horror).

I love my Montbell no5 superstretch- I cant fault it.
Its quite water-resistant too. Not sure about the price over the pond though.

I was recently show High Peak sleeping bags from a military friend who has slept in alot of different temps in various bags. He says for the money they can't be beat. I bought the Extreme Pak 0 degree. I have had it down to 5 degrees and with 2 layers on plus a air mat I was fine. They recently came out with their down bags. I hope to give them a try. For the weight/ price v/s performance they are hard to beat.
