Month of June Voting

Postby zelph » Mon Jun 28, 2010 10:22 am

Here are the entries for this months voting:

Dome Zone - Entered in month of May by Just tinkering

Greetings!

Attached is my entry for the May SOTMC (as I will be out of the country for several weeks). The DOME ZONE alcohol stove is a derivation of the CONE ZONE family, except it that has been designed for DA. The basic design can boil 2 cups of water using <14 ml of alcohol. I am excited about the design as I have been able to crack the 15 ml barrier. Hopefully, with this design, I might be able to get closer to the performance of the ION stove from Sgt. Rock (10 -12 ml, see the link further down in the thread). As always, your comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Son of DOME ZONE - Entered June 18 by Just Tinkering

Thanks to Zelph (Dan), I was able to make a the Son of DOME ZOME using the top of a Venom bottle. The performance is the about the same as the original DOME ZONE: under 14 ml S-L-X to boil 2 cups of 70 F water. Right now, 14 ml will bring it to a boil with almost 2 morre minutes of burn. I get to 206 F using 13 ml so I am pretty sure that 13.5 ml will bring the stove to a full boil (but who is going to measure in 1/2 ml amounts out anyway). Anyway, soda cans fit perfectly on the Venom bottle.

June entry: The Bellagio-ACORN alcohol stove - by Just Tinkering

The Bellagio-ACORN stove coupled with a windscreen/thermal barrier boils 2 cups of 70 F water using 15 ml and the boil time is 5 1/4 minutes. The Bellagio-ACORN stove uses the Bellagio folds for the inner cup and the jet from the ACORN stove. This stove is quite a bit of work to make however; in conjuction with the thermal barrier plate, the overall system performance is pretty nice. The overall boil time was reduced (relate to the ACORN stove) from 9 minutes down to 5 1/4 with no change in overall fuel efficiency. Let mem know what you think.

The Weekender stove - by ShakeyJke

The Weekender stove has the capacity of 4 fl. oz. (118.29 ml.) This vid showes its components and assembly.

For testing the conditions are:
Outside temp: ~56`F, light breeze
Elevation: ~350 feet
Water temp: ~55`F (2 cups in a stainless steel pot)
Pot and stove are cooled between each test

The test results are:
An average boil time of 12.3 min. with 13 total boils achieved for the 4 fl. oz. of denatured alcohol. (3.25 boils per 1 fl. oz.) (9.09 ml. used per boil)
The stove burned for ~170 min total ( by adding burn times in the tests)

Drawbacks may include a longer boil time than some, it dosent simmer ( a simmer top could be made for it, but nothing yet) and it may be to heavy for some :P

Enjoy
Jake

Good entries and I am on the fence with the Weekender Stove and the Bellagio-ACORN stove coupled with a windscreen. I like the idea of sealing the fuel after use like the trangia. The Weekender reminds me of a stove, I think, Skids made with the pop up center burner wick. I give my vote to the Bellagio-Acorn w/windscreen. I like the innovative idea of creasing and folding the aluminum and the calcera type windscreen/pot support is pretty nifty also. ;)

I don't feel qualified to pick one until/if I build a few myself. I will say that all of you make impressive stuff. The build quality, creativeness and fabrication skills are inspiring.

Thank you all for sharing your workmanship and ideas.

Taking the windscreens out of the picture and looking at the stoves only...

Bellagio-Acorn gets my vote.
