Put a half cover over the top of the kettle to slow it down.
Wow, we were just discussing the same thing at work today. I was explaining how the kettle works and the DIY kettle that I made,
http://www.bplite.com/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=818&p=6059&hilit=kelly+kettle#p6059 When my friend suggested putting the cap back on the Bud bottle and drilling holes in the cap to slow the lost heat from escaping up the chimney, giving more heat transfer inside the kettle. I stopped by the Army Surplus Store this afternoon and obtained the esbit tab stove bottom made for the canteen cup to see how well it works using wood or an Alky stove. This stove facinates me and I will probably, eventually, let go of some clams and get one. Devon Montgomery , over at BPL has put a lot of time and resources into creating a smaller, lighter version that hopefully he will be able to retail at some point in time. Here is a link to the last page of his thread that shows the end results. Worth a look and read!
