Charcoal As Good Fireatarter

that makes sence to me. i keep a few pieces of what my family calls fat lighter which is fat wood with me. its about the best thing i can find to get a fire going with that is know. even if i dont have any with me its easy to find around here.

Fatwood works great. They clearanced a bunch of big boxes at Kroger for a dollar....bought them all!

Wood charred from a fire will often take the spark from a ferro rod. It won't flame but smolders enough for you to ignite other tinder like dried grass. Its like sparking onto King Alfred's cakes/cramp balls.

yes i heard of char wood you had to bring it up i save some from my wood stove was going to try it in a hobo stove with fan later this summer just need one more part when i find it at lawn sale and build it [ shhh a secret stove of the mouth i hope ]

I didn't see any links on how to make char cloth so I figured I'd share a link from Jason Klass's website. Haven't tried to follow his instructions but am planning to as part of a fire building program with my Webelos this summer.

I tried getting a pice of charred wood to take a spark last night. It would'nt catch. I'll try a different pice when I can. I'll give it 2 more tries and that's it till when I go on vacation and have lots of campfires

charcloth isnt hard to do.

speaking of fire starting i still think my favorite emergency fire starter is zelphs key chain fire starter. its small and light weight. with all the keys i have to carry i couldnt tell it way there.

Ok here my char cloth is made n that brasslite stove on 1/2 oz. alcohol is just right to make char cloth in that shoe polish can a vent in top nial size and i use kerosene wick for char cloth cut 3/4 long.
