Wood charred from a fire will often take the spark from a ferro rod. It won't flame but smolders enough for you to ignite other tinder like dried grass. Its like sparking onto King Alfred's cakes/cramp balls.

Very popular with brit bushcrafters

First time I've heard of that. I've never tried it because it was never said by anyone that it will take a spark. Now I will have to try it :D

Oops, what have you heard about this? Ever tried charred wood?

The fungus that grows on trees is a well known firestarter that will catch a spark.

I didn't see any links on how to make char cloth so I figured I'd share a link from Jason Klass's website. Haven't tried to follow his instructions but am planning to as part of a fire building program with my Webelos this summer.

I tried getting a pice of charred wood to take a spark last night. It would'nt catch. I'll try a different pice when I can. I'll give it 2 more tries and that's it till when I go on vacation and have lots of campfires :D

Oops56 has a good video on making char cloth using an alcohol stove to bake it. Oops, bring on the video :D
