thats interesting but i will still take my filter. i dont always use it but i always take it just to be safe. like the article said at the end you have to use caution when selecting your water source. i have used untreated water and havent had a problem but i still take the filter incase i cant find good water.

I am a renal transplant survivor. I can't take chances with infections. I will continue to filter or treat (I use Aqua Mira) my water unless I see it melting right out of the snowfield.

Besides Giardia there are other waterborne pathogens. In Canada one of my party made it a point to let everyone know he wasn't filtering his water. The next morning we rounded a bend to see a rotting moose carcass floating in an eddy.

The next stop he borrowed someones pump.

When ever I am suspect of the water, I boil it. My brother-in-law gave me a paperback titled"How to S--t in the Woods" In it was information provided by a doctor concerning the concerns of hikers etc. of water in the United States. He said it's ok to drink(short version)

One problem I'm concerned about is all the people now hiking and camping. How many have read "How to Shite in the Woods" ? How many practice good technique? Bury their waste and shite poppies?

The area I'm going to this next summer has horse packers on certain trails and lakes. Who buries the horse plop?

Good point HOZ. I read that toilete paper rosettes were a big problem to trail maintenance personnel at one area along the Appalation Trail. Not burying their waste, just letting it sit there with a tp rosette on top of it making it look like a little present

Nobody buries Road Apples/Trail Apples

Anybody know how well dog hikers are doing as far as trail manners. Are they doing a good job of covering up or do their owners do the doggie bag thing?

Thanks for the link to the excellent Giardia article.

Even though we have similar stories about Giardia here in OZ I have never treated water in the bush and I have never been infected but I am careful, I always source water upstream from a campsite or hut especially if it does not have a pit toilet.

Anecdotes do not a scientific paper make. There are smokers who've lived past 100. Should we conclude from this that smoking is safe? Visual inspection cannot guarantee that your water is pathogen free, period. You can drink water from a sewer and not get sick. You can drink water from a sewer and die. Mr. Shlimmer has not found a way to avoid Giardia, Cryptosporidium, E-Coli, Hepatitis, Polio or any of a number of other water borne infections. He has simply laid out a numbers game. That he's playing it himself is foolhardy. That he's enticing others to do the same is unconscionable .
