Coil Stoves can be made for good fun stuff

Post by zelph » Thu Dec 20, 2012 10:48 am

One thing let to another and I wound up looking at this site that shows a coil ststove of sorts used to power up a little boat. This would be a good project for Steamjam when he sits at his desk and is in a boring mode.

I was seaching Esbit and this little coil is fired with sterno but an esbit cube can also be used especially the smaller 4 gram size.

The science is way simple. I wonder what happens when you scale that up?.... BTW it sounds just like my bug.. :)

I think I read you can find them on ebay.

I don't see why you coulnd't just scale them up. There was an amphibious car made that had props to propel it. Adapt this pop pop idea to the car :o

LOL...I can't believe that I've just spent the last couple of hours looking at POP POP boats and engines. Very interesting indeed. Just what I need another hobby.

steamjam, it's funny that some of them do sound like a mini Bug.

This got me to thinking more on the lines of a soda can with a companion burner under it.

The simple coil engines seem rather easy to build for a first timer(OK, where's my aluminum tubing...lol).

Here is a video I found of different engine designs. F/F to 1:05 and check out the boiler and the small burner that provides the heat. It looks like a micro-mini backpacking stove.

Edit to Add...It appears the particular frame(1:05) that I was talking about is what is actually shown below.

Essentially the pop pop engines are water tube "flash" boilers.

water tube basics:

as found in Doble steam cars. These things are amazing. Goes from stone cold to 1500 PSI of steam and ready to drive in 60 seconds!
