its to heat up curling iron it can be to heat up a whiskey bottle also

Actually, oops aint all wrong :o

When I indulged(many many years ago) cognac was my goto fuel :o In France it was Pernod....smooth stuff! ;)

Okay..so why is the burner NOT under the potstand?...Me think we've got some "guessers" on the facts... ;)

The burner portion lifts out(the round part) and is placed into the section on the left.
The stove is also used to sterilize a surgeons knife blade for surgical purposes. Movie "Dances with Wolves" lots of amputations going on there. Remember when the General called up for his surgeon. His wagon contained one of these stoves :?

What does a womans curling iron look like that would use one of these stoves? :?

Hey, history books says it's a military item ;)

The proof is in the photo that has the tape measure to show the length. Look at the section on the left. You will see a shiny bottom that is protected by the burner while the unit is in operation. The darkened area is soot from the kerosene fuel burned at the time. It bounces off the bottom of the mug/pot. That area was neglected by the stove owner when it was cleaned. ;)
